What is Spelt Flour?
Spelt is a type of wheat. It is an ancient grain made from the entire grain. It has not been mixed with any other species of wheat and this makes it a pure form of whole grain. It also has more amino acids, vitamins, and minerals.
How is spelt flour different than wheat flour?
Spelt flour is higher in fiber, and easier to digest because it has extra fiber which makes it easier to digest. It does have gluten, which is a protein found in the flour, therefore it is not tolerable by persons who are gluten-intolerable, such as persons with celiac disease, non-celiac gluten sensitivity, and wheat allergy. When you compare red winter wheat to spelt, it has a more soluble protein.
What is spelt flour best used for?
Spelt flour can be used for any recipe that whole wheat or all purpose flour is used for. It is great for cookies, cakes, pancakes, bread, and muffins.
The main Ingredients used in a spelt flour pancake recipe
Spelt flour
You are preparing spelt flour pancakes; how can they be made without spelt flour?
If you haven’t heard about spelt flour, it is nothing but whole wheat flour. However, it contains more nutrients than ordinary wheat.
Spelt flour is a versatile baking ingredient that is relatively light in weight and airy. The best part is that it provides light sweetness and exquisite nutty flavor in pancakes.
Sugar or Blended dates
You might always think that sugar only enhances the flavor of the food. But did you know that it makes pancakes tender? Not only this, but these little grains also help them to hold moisture and give a nice golden touch.
Blended dates work in the same way as sugar. You are free to replace sugar with blended dates for a healthier option. So don’t forget to add flavor and an eye-catching look to your pancakes with this ingredient.
Baking powder
Baking powder forms bubbles in the pancake batter. It makes your pancakes light and fluffy. It’s a simple switch that can significantly impact your pancakes’ appearance and texture.
Baking Soda
Baking soda works flawlessly with added baking powder and milk. It reacts with them fastly and produces carbon dioxide bubbles. This results in a smooth and creamy batter for pancakes.
Coconut milk
Generally, milk is added to make the perfect pancake batter. However, coconut milk is here to rescue you in this case. It gives the pancake an incredible richness and depth of flavor that is the hardest to find. It also adds moisture, so the batter doesn’t dry out during cooking. All these features can make it easier for you to flip!
You can also use other plant-based milk, like oat or almond milk, as you like.
Melted butter (Plant-based)
Remember to add some plant-based melted butter if you want rich and moist pancakes. You can also use it on your pan to prevent pancakes from sticking.
There is no need to fret if you are out of non-dairy butter. You can use coconut oil in that case.
Flax seeds
Punch up the nutritional value of your spelt pancakes with some flax seeds. You can easily use flaxseed eggs in place of chicken eggs.
Flax seeds add moisture, and they have an excellent binding ability. Furthermore, they are rich in omega-3 fatty acids and fibers.
Vanilla extract
Vanilla extract may seem small, but it can do wonders. It can elevate the flavor by mixing with other ingredients in your pancakes.
Remember to add half a teaspoon of salt, which boosts the taste of other ingredients.
How can you store a vegan spelt flour pancake?
The spelt pancakes are fluffy, light pancakes with a delicate flavor. That makes it perfect for breakfast, brunch, or dessert. The good thing about them is that you can prepare them ahead of time.
Just prepare them and let them cook properly. Then layer them on one another by keeping a plastic sheet or wax paper among them. Afterward, you can store them in an airtight container or a freezer-safe bag.
These stored pancakes can be kept safely for a week in the fridge and for a month in the freezer.
Can you freeze and reheat the spelt pancake?
Pancakes are the favorite breakfast food of everyone. But nobody likes to prepare them every day. Fortunately, pancakes can be made in advance. So you can whip an immense amount of pancake batter next time to prepare loads of pancakes.
Just remember to freeze them adequately. Then, whenever you are in the mood to have them, reheat them. Set your oven temperature to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and keep them in it for 10 minutes. And voila! Your fluffy and tasty pancakes are ready!
Why should you choose coconut milk?
This spelt cake with coconut milk is a delicious and simple way to enjoy the rich taste of coconut. It has loads of vitamins and can replace dairy milk wonderfully. It also makes the batter thin, so you can quickly whip up a batch.
