Ingredients used in Bahamian Peas Soup and Dumplings
Pigeon peas
Pigeon peas are just another kind of bean. Peas get their name from their small size and resemblance to pods. These beans have a diameter of approximately a quarter of an inch and are beige with brown markings. Pigeon peas are known for their robust, bitter flavor and mealy consistency.
Onions
For extra flavor, try adding some chopped onion to your broth. Onions provide depth and an umami flavor to the soup.
Celery
The pureed soup gets a new dimension of flavor by adding celery leaves. But when these veggies are gone, they’re swapped out with a fresh celery crop. You want them to be tender but not mushy, so they go in during the last few minutes of cooking.
Tomato paste
Tomato paste is a common ingredient to enhance the flavor of sauces, soups, and stews—every tomato-based cuisine benefits from adding tomato paste. You may add it to a marinade, a spice paste, or a jar of sauce and let it simmer for a bit.
Tomato Sauce
When you have prepared the soup, stir in the tomato sauce and let the soup stew for five more minutes.
Carrot
Add the carrots when the beans are nearly mushy, with about half an hour left in cooking time. This will guarantee that the carrots are thoroughly cooked without becoming mushy.
Potato
Potatoes are high in carbohydrates and low in water content. They absorb the moisture in soup and become mushy. As a result, they are ideal for thickening broths and balancing out lighter soups.
Cassava
The flavor of cassava root is balanced among earthy, sweet, and nutty notes with a touch of bitterness. It has a subtle flavor that is enhanced with more robust flavors.
Coconut milk
Add a can of coconut milk if the soup has a creamier flavor and texture. Boil for Five more minutes after adding the dumplings and coconut milk.
Sugar and maple syrup
Sugar and maple syrup might work in this recipe as well. It enhances the flavor of many dishes with a subtle sweetness or an authentic, earthy aroma.
Salt and pepper
Half a teaspoon of salt and a quarter of a teaspoon of pepper would be an excellent seasoning for a soup or stew.
Ingredients used in dumpling recipe
Whole wheat flour
The dumplings would be just as good if made with whole wheat flour. Working the dough into a ball, gradually add one cup of cold water while kneading.
Unbleached white flour
To create dumplings, you’ll need unbleached white flour. Put unbleached two cups of all-purpose flour into a big bowl to get started. Knead the dough while adding 1 cup of cold water until it comes together in a smooth ball.
Baking powder
To increase the dumplings’ flakiness, you may also add baking powder. In a large bowl, combine 2 cups of unbleached white flour, one teaspoon of baking powder and salt, and one teaspoon of sugar. So it’s easier to work with the flour if you do it just after you measure it.
Salt and sugar
One teaspoon of sugar and one teaspoon of salt may enhance the dumplings’ flavor. In a large bowl, combine 2 cups of unbleached white flour, one teaspoon of baking powder and salt, and one teaspoon of sugar. Complete your tasks while the flour is still in the basin. Working the dough into a ball, gradually add one cup of cold water while kneading. After a few minutes of kneading, the dough should feel as silky and smooth as the fabric it was named for.
